About me

Hi! My name is Joefin Peter. I am a certified reproductive-spectrum doula (labour/birth, postpartum, fertility, loss/abortion) & sexual health educator. When we say it takes a village to raise a child, we often forget that it actually takes a village to support new parents. I hope to be a part of your community! In my opinion, creating community starts with a "home away from home". I have a passion for supporting diasporic families, third-culture kids, and immigrants like myself. My specialty is blending science and cultural practices. Racialized individuals can feel isolated and helpless as a result of immigration, acculturation, and individualization. These feelings are then magnified when dealing with sexual & reproductive health. This is where I come in! I aim to be a reliable source of education, support, and comfort. I operate from a feminist, anti-oppressive, and trauma-informed lens.

Service introduction

I offer support following a "PIES" model, broken down as practical, information, emotional, and social support!

Packages
Postpartum and Parenting Support
1. Practical Support → This can look like the physical work that needs to be done in your home like light housekeeping, meal prepping, bringing you water, snacks, and food. This can also be physical help that you or your baby might need like helping with a wash and personal care or feeds. I am skilled at taking care of a newborn, if you need a reliable person (who will respect your wishes) to care for your baby. I am happy to problem solve with you on anything that comes up! 2. Informational Support → The fourth trimester can come with a lot of uncertainty. I am good at answering your questions with empathy and clarity. I have a passion for empowering parents to make informed decisions while avoiding unnecessary pressures. This will save you a lot of money! 3. Emotional Support → Based on clients’ desires, I debrief birth experiences to talk through any feelings coming up. I am happy to be a neutral and non-judgemental listener as you navigate the newness of parenthood. I understand how when you are just trying to survive with a newborn, things can get pretty rough. I work with clients to navigate through this while building long-term sustainability. 4. Social Support → I encourage my clients to see how their social circles can be a major resource in building a sustainable parenting lifestyle. Leaning on your friends and family to manage tasks, chores, and even “shifts” in the household can be life changing. You do not have to go through this alone!

Labour and Birth Support
“Labour Day” might be unpredictable but there are things that can be predictable like my support. 1. Practical Support → I provide hands-on support as clients desire, like gentle massage, hip squeezes and counterpressure. I encourage and suggest movement during the stages of labour, as appropriate, to help the birthing person. In circumstances of chronic conditions, I am quick to modify positions for both comfort and “efficiency”. I also take verbal and non-verbal cues to respond to your needs! This might look like fanning you when you’re warm, or grabbing a blanket when you’re cold. 2. Informational Support → In the event that something needs to be explained to you, I will step up to relay information to you so you can make an informed choice. At the hospital, this might also look like knowing policy, procedure, and the logistics of the hospital. I will know your birth preferences so I can advocate on your behalf. However, I do not make medical decisions on your behalf. I will help you to get the information necessary to make informed decisions. I will also remind you if there is a departure from your birth plan. I will discuss your concerns with you and suggest options, but you and your partner/support person will speak on your behalf to the clinical staff. 3. Emotional Support → During labour/birth, I am a reassuring presence for my clients. I am there holding your hand saying affirmations during each contraction! If needed, I will gently remind you of your birth preferences. 4. Social Support → This can look like drawing boundaries for staff, family, or friends. This can also look like incorporating cultural, religious or spiritual beliefs into your labour/birth experience!

Joefin did an incredible job in supporting my birth journey! The pre birth sessions were far superior than any birthing classes I’ve attended in the past. She prepared me for what to expect thoroughly and went through all my history and birth preferences. During labour, Joefin suggested multiple approaches, positions and tactics to help me along the way. She had my best interests at heart, was observant of me during the process and questioned hospital staff as needed. She worked well with my family during my lengthy birth. I highly recommend Joefin, she is knowledgeable, friendly and comfortable to be around!

Joefin was the backup doula provided at our birth as our contracted doula was unavailable. We met her on the day of our little one's birth. Prior to the birth, she was easily reached and professional in her communication. When she arrived during our labour, she was very personable and supportive, making it easy to work with her despite never having met her prior. I felt at ease with her presence. She also made good recommendations for moving labour along, but always provided me agency in whether or not I take those recommendations. I never felt pressured into doing something I wasn't comfortable with. Additionally, she was an excellent supporter for my partner who is very squeamish around blood. Both of us were very grateful to have her there during the labour and in the few hours after while we got settled. If I were to have another birth, it would be a no-brainer to have Joefin there again!

As first time parents, we were very impressed and grateful for Joefin’s vast experience and knowledge as a day doula. Her passion for all things babies shines through, and she used a lot of patience and curiosity to learn what our household and baby needed to thrive. She has a very bright energy and we always felt comfortable around Joefin and leaving our baby with her. She was also an excellent communicator and always showed up a few minutes early to get settled and see how we were doing. Thank you for being our baby’s first friend!
