For all of history, up until the last century or two, birth was a uniquely feminine and sacred event supported by midwives, mothers, sisters, friends, and neighbors. Mothers were given the space, trust, and respect to intuitively birth their children, just as their bodies were designed to. In the 20th century, the modernization of birth care, intended to increase safety, unfortunately pushed labor support out the picture. Doctors became more concerned with outcomes alone than with the transformative experience of birth, itself. The emergence of doulas in the developed world was a desperate and necessary response to the all-too-common technocratic birthing model that has changed society’s entire view and practice of giving birth. The culture of non-medical labor support is thankfully not lost. Women deserve the same sanctity, respect, and space to do what their bodies know best now, as they did for all those centuries. I believe supporting the birth experience in its traditional light is my calling.

I have worked with supporting families and the unique challenges that a family can face with their children since I was 17. I have also had the opportunity to support couples through infertility to have a family since 2012. I believe that my desire to help build families and through becoming a mother my self has led me to Doula work. I took my training in February 2016 and haven’t looked back! There is so much beauty and excitement in pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. There is also the unexpected and I love being a support to a new family through it all.
