What happens during a lactation consultation?

Breastfeeding is never one-size-fits-all, so I’ll begin by listening to you—your story, your experience, and your breastfeeding goals. My priority is to make sure you’re comfortable and that all of your concerns are fully addressed during the consultation.

When your baby is ready, I’ll assess their oral function, take a pre-feeding weight using a professional infant scale, and—if possible—invite you to feed your baby so I can observe a full feeding. I’ll help with positioning as needed and answer your questions along the way.

Together, we’ll explore different solutions and create a personalized breastfeeding plan that fits both your and your baby’s needs. If necessary, we’ll also schedule a follow-up appointment.

During the visit, we may work with a breast pump and try different flange sizes to find the best fit for you. If your baby is very hungry, we may begin with a feeding and talk through your history while your baby is at the breast. If you’re very engorged or in significant pain, we’ll focus first on relieving discomfort.

Question 2

My nipples are bleeding and I can’t put my baby to the breast. How will you assess the latch?

Accepted Answer

Pain and stress are the enemies of breastfeeding. My top priority is making sure you’re comfortable and allowing your nipples time to heal before pushing anything further.

If latching isn’t possible, we’ll create a plan to stimulate your milk supply and ensure your baby is well fed until you’re ready to resume breastfeeding at the breast. I can also assess your baby’s tongue function and overall oral coordination.

Question 3

I want to pump but not breastfeed directly at the breast. Can you still help me?

Absolutely. Exclusive pumping is becoming more common—and it’s something I’ve personally done with my second child. If this is your feeding goal, I’ll help you achieve it with practical, realistic strategies to make pumping as efficient, sustainable, and manageable as possible.

I’m already triple feeding, I’m exhausted, and my milk supply isn’t improving. Is there still hope?

Yes. This situation is incredibly overwhelming—especially when you’ve been sacrificing sleep and bonding time with your baby, yet not seeing progress. I’ve helped many families navigate this challenge with a strong success rate.

And no, I won’t automatically tell you to add another middle-of-the-night pumping session if you’re already sleep-deprived. There are many ways to reach your breastfeeding goals, and being well rested and connected with your baby is often one of the most important factors.

In rare cases, there may be an underlying medical reason that limits milk production. Lactation challenges can sometimes be early signs of a health issue. Identifying the root cause supports a mother’s long-term health and may also help with breastfeeding success—now or with future children, if you choose to grow your family.

What if I don’t have breastfeeding issues but I’m going back to work, starting solids, or weaning my baby?

You don’t need to be experiencing challenges to benefit from a lactation consultation. I support families during transitions such as returning to work, introducing solids, and weaning—whether gradual or planned.

We can create a personalized plan that fits your goals, your baby’s needs, and your schedule. This may include pumping strategies, milk storage guidance, maintaining or adjusting supply, introducing solids in a supportive way, or weaning comfortably and safely for both you and your baby.

Question 6

Do you offer in-home, in-office, and telehealth visits?

Accepted Answer

I offer in-home visits in Longmont and the surrounding areas, within a 45-minute driving radius. If you live farther away, I may still be able to travel depending on availability, with an additional travel fee.

My office is located in Niwot and is ideal for follow-up visits or for clients who live farther away.

Telehealth consultations are available worldwide. Please note that not all insurance plans cover telehealth services, so be sure to check your benefits in advance.

During scheduling, we can determine which option is the best fit based on your needs, location, and the type of support you’re looking for.

Do you take insurance?

Yes! I'm currently in-network with Cigna, Aetna, Medicaid, First Health and First Choice Health (Tricare and United Healthcare coming soon).
