Midwifery Care
A standard midwifery schedule:
Visits every 4 weeks until 28 weeks
Visits every 2 weeks until 36 weeks
Weekly visits until birth
Extra appointments as needed
Longer visits: Each appointment lasts about 45–60 minutes, giving us time to talk through all your questions and concerns
In-home birth team visit: Around 36–37 weeks, we’ll meet at your home with your full birth team (including anyone you plan to invite into your birth space) to prepare and make sure you feel supported.
Once your labor begins, we’ll stay in close contact until I come to your home to monitor you and your baby. Your birth experience is yours — you choose how you labor, and I’m there to support you and your comfort every step of the way. When it’s time to welcome your baby, my assistant (a second Licensed Midwife) joins us to help provide care. After your baby is born, I’ll stay until you and your baby are stable and settled in. I’ll remain on-call for you throughout your first six weeks postpartum.
Monitrice (Supplemental Care with Planned Hospital Birth)
My doula services fall under monitrice care. A Monitrice combines the emotional and physical support of a doula with some clinical skills, such as monitoring fetal heart tones or checking cervical dilation but does not offer full prenatal care throughout pregnancy. A monitrice does not offer antibiotics, anti-hemorrhagic medications such as Cytotec or Pitocin, or other medications in pregnancy, labor, or postpartum. Monitrice services include clinical skills during labor support for clients that plan to have a hospital or birth center birth, such as: Continuous Labor Support Monitoring client vitals Fetal heart rate monitoring for clients who want to labor at home and feel the need for reassurance of basic vital signs. A monitrice may also offer vaginal/cervical checks for dilation. This option is for clients that want or need to birth in the hospital, but would like supplemental midwifery care (which includes postpartum care!).

Postpartum only Midwifery Care
The weeks after birth are a sacred and transformative time. Even if you did not have midwifery care during your pregnancy or birth, you can still receive nurturing, holistic support in the postpartum period. Postpartum-only care focuses on your recovery, emotional well-being, and the transition into parenthood.
Your care includes:
Three home visits within the first two weeks after birth to check your healing, bleeding, blood pressure, and overall recovery, along with newborn assessments (feeding, weight, jaundice screening).
Office visits at 4, 6, 8, and 12 weeks postpartum, with additional check-ins at 6 months and 1 year.
Lactation support and guidance with feeding challenges.
Emotional check-ins and resources for mental health and community support.
Gentle guidance for infant care and family adjustment.
This thoughtful schedule ensures you and your baby are well-supported in the early days and beyond—through the first year of parenthood.

Placenta Encapsulation
Placenta Encapsulation is a natural way to support the fourth trimester. It has been shown to support a smoother postpartum transition, increase energy, promote faster healing, establish more balanced moods, lessen postpartum hair loss and increase milk production.
The placenta is extremely nutrient rich, high in iron, protein, vitamins and minerals, including vitamin B6 and of course, your own natural hormones. Your placenta is perfectly made for you, by you. Experts agree that the placenta retains hormones, and thus reintroducing them to your system may ease hormonal fluctuations.
Placenta pills are believed to:
o Increase postpartum energy levels
o Ease your postpartum transition
o Help the uterus to contract down and therefore lessens postpartum bleeding
o Ease fatigue
o Contain your own natural hormones
o Balance your system
o Replenish nutrients lost during childbirth
*The placenta is dried, ground, and encapsulated according to food safety standards. Little Star Birth Services SD uses Universal Precautions and adheres to OSHA safety standards.
